I like to go online to search for some tips and tricks. My parents live in Costa Rica and I was wondering how I can save a big amount of money to be able to go there once a year to visit them, because it’s quite expensive to fly there. I was online and I discovered the 52 weeks challenge. The idea is to save a certain amount of money each week over one year. If you keep up with it and follow-through, at the end of the 52 weeks you will have saved a good chunk of money. Basically, you start by saving one euro on the first week of the challenge and add one euro every week. It means that you would save two euros on week 2, 3 euros on week 3 and so on till you arrive at 52 euros for the last week of the challenge. In the end, the amount saved over the year sums up to more than 1000 euros.

What I like about this approach is that it feels kind of like a game and allows me to reach my goals quite painlessly. The first couple of months, you don’t even notice that you’re putting money aside. It’s just a couple of euros every week, basically nothing. I believe it’s a great thing to try. When I’ve done it for my Costa Rica trip it worked out really nicely. At the end I didn’t even have to spend everything I saved to fly there!

When I started working, I wanted to start saving my own money, rather than putting my earnings into my parent’s account. What I started doing was putting aside a certain amount of money at the beginning of each month.. In my case, I put 10% of my salary aside at the beginning of each month, which is quite a lot if you think about it.

I started doing it on a separate bank account that I had in Spain, but now I am using the Pockets of my Vivid account. As soon as I get my salary, I move 10% of it on a Pocket I’ve called “Savings”. The process is super easy.

The reason I do it at the beginning of the month and not at the end is because I don’t have to think about it anymore and I’m not tempted to spend that money. On top of that, what I’ve realized is that at the end of the month I usually still have some money left, which I then move again to my “Savings” Pocket. It’s really nice to watch your money grow so naturally.

Like many people, I love travelling and I definitely miss doing it at the moment. As it is quite complicated right now, I haven’t picked a destination yet for my next trip. In the meantime, what I am doing with my girlfriend but also with some other friends is that we have created shared pockets in Vivid to allow us to travel together once it will be possible.

What I like about this approach is that you don’t really have to have a plan and that one can decide almost at the last moment where you want to go and do it with the people you appreciate the most.

The other good aspect of using the shared pocket is that you don’t have to think about who owes what to whom and ask yourself who should be the one paying the restaurant or the drinks! Everything is already shared! Basically with this technique, you can plan not to plan anything.
